Independent Shops

“You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy local and that’s kind of the same.” - Anon

After something a little more unique to take home? Then we recommend you support local business with these independent shops.

Swish

Sustainable fashion.

While in Edinburgh why not visit Swish? They are an independent fashion business that commit to stocking sustainable brands. Because of this they have attracted a loyal local following. They are located in the heart of Edinburgh. This family run business has been stocking and printing fashion wear since 1994. Finally, on top of the two shops Swish also offer a print service.

Calzeat

For all things woven.

They are a past winner of Scotland’s most enterprising business. Because of this they have attracted some of the top textile workers in the country to their company. Furthermore they own their own weaving mill just outside of Edinburgh and run two shops located in the Old Town.

W. Armstrong & Son

Thrift store for both traditional and vintage clothing.

Something of an institution here in Edinburgh.  They have been selling fashion to the residents of Edinburgh since 1840. Armstrong's specialise in retro and vintage clothing, because of this they have attracted celebrities such as Noel Feilding to their shops. Also a great place to buy a kilt. They currently have three outlets in Edinburgh.  You will find their flagship shop down in the Grassmarket.

Museum of Context

For Harry Potter enthusiasts

Finally we have the Museum of Context which is for all the Harry Potter fans out there. They have a large collection of official Harry Potter memorabilia. The "Aladdin’s Cave" for all things Potter. The shop could not be better located sitting in the middle of Victoria Street.  Victoria Street is the real life Diagon Alley. Because of this it is very popular with tourists.
